How Kumbhak May Help Balance Ida–Pingala, Moon–Sun Energy and the Left–Right Brain: A Complete Swara Yoga Guide to Samatvam

Discover how Kumbhak relates to Ida–Pingala, lunar and solar energy, Swara Yoga, the nasal cycle, left–right brain functions, Ayurveda and the Gita’s teaching of Samatvam—without confusing yogic truth with scientific proof.

There are days when the mind becomes all Sun: planning, correcting, pushing, proving. There are other days when it becomes all Moon: absorbing, remembering, feeling, withdrawing. Stress can trap us at either extreme. We may act without listening—or feel so much that action becomes impossible.

Kumbhak offers a different experience. The breath enters. It rests. It leaves. It rests. Activity and receptivity are not forced to defeat one another; both are given their place around a center that does not move.

That is why Kumbhak can be understood as a profound practice of balance. In the language of Haṭha Yoga, it concerns Ida, Pingala and Sushumna. In Swara Yoga, it concerns the lunar, solar and central Swaras. In Ayurveda, it evokes the relationship between Soma and Agni, nourishment and transformation. In neuroscience, it invites questions about the nasal cycle, autonomic regulation, interoception and cooperation between the cerebral hemispheres.

These are related lenses, but they are not interchangeable. Ida is not simply the right hemisphere. Pingala is not simply the left hemisphere. Sushumna is not the corpus callosum. Those comparisons can be useful as modern analogies; they are not identities established by classical texts or laboratory anatomy.

The deepest balance is not a permanent fifty–fifty state. It is the ability to meet stillness without dullness, action without agitation, feeling without drowning, thought without becoming imprisoned by thought.

Balance is not the silencing of life’s two currents. It is freedom from being carried away by either one.


How the Ten-Step Kumbhak Brings Moon and Sun Around One Center 🌙☀️


The answer in one breath

The Ten-Step Kumbhak does not close one nostril, prescribe an alternate-nostril ratio or ask you to manufacture equal airflow. It works more fundamentally:

  • Pūrak expresses reception and expansion. You inhale normally through the nose while lifting the center of the chest until comfortably full.
  • Antar Kumbhak suspends immediate reaction while full. The chest center remains lifted, yet the face, throat, shoulders, chest and abdomen remain relaxed.
  • Rechak expresses release and return. You exhale normally through the nose while lowering the center of the chest until comfortably empty.
  • Bāhya Kumbhak suspends immediate reaction while empty. The chest center remains lowered without pulling in the abdomen or straining.
  • The intervening normal Pūrak and Rechak prevent the round from becoming biased toward only fullness or only emptiness.
  • The final normal Pūrak–Rechak and two recovery breaths restore ordinary rhythm before another round.

In a traditional yogic interpretation, the solar and lunar tendencies are not balanced because the practitioner forcibly makes both nostrils identical. They are balanced because expansion and release, fullness and emptiness, activation and receptivity are each completed without grasping.

Scientifically, this should be phrased more modestly: the practice combines bilateral nasal breathing, focused attention, chest movement, two comfortable respiratory pauses and recovery breaths. These elements can influence cardiorespiratory and attentional processes. No published trial has yet shown that this exact Ten-Step Kumbhak “balances Ida and Pingala” or equalizes left- and right-hemisphere activity.


Why Antar Kumbhak and Bāhya Kumbhak belong together

Antar Kumbhak follows a comfortably full Pūrak. Bāhya Kumbhak follows a comfortably empty Rechak. Their inner messages are different:

Antar Kumbhak asks: Can I contain fullness without clinging, bracing or becoming excited?

Bāhya Kumbhak asks: Can I remain present in emptiness without panic, collapse or immediate escape?

One person may be comfortable accumulating but frightened of letting go. Another may release easily but struggle to receive. One may live in endless effort; another may retreat before action begins. A round containing both retentions does not diagnose these patterns, but it gives the practitioner a small, honest place to notice them.

The round becomes a living equation:

receive → pause → release → receive → release → pause → complete → recover

The center of the chest remains the continuous point of attention. Breath states change; the witness remains. This is closer to Samatvam than trying to freeze the body into an artificial midpoint.


The non-negotiable safety boundary

Both retentions must finish while they still feel completely easy and while you remain certain you could have continued for at least another three seconds. The first urge to breathe, strain or uneasiness means the retention has reached its boundary: begin the next normal Rechak or Pūrak immediately.

This is a normal breathing practice, not a breath-holding contest. A “full” Pūrak is comfortably full, never maximum filling. A “full” Rechak is comfortably empty, never the squeezing out of every last trace of air.


Ida, Pingala and Sushumna: What the Classical Teaching Actually Says 🕉️


Ida: the lunar current

Ida is traditionally associated with the left side and the Moon. Its symbolic field includes cooling, inwardness, receptivity, restoration, imagination, feeling, assimilation and the power to pause before acting.

These qualities do not make Ida weak. Night is not a failed day. Recovery is not the absence of intelligence. The Moon does not produce its own visible light, yet it makes darkness navigable. Ida represents the intelligence that receives, reflects and nourishes.

When the Ida tendency is functionally available, a person may find it easier to listen, sense context, remain with uncertainty, recover and notice subtleties. When an Ida-like tendency becomes excessive or distorted, the person may experience withdrawal, inertia, indecision, passivity or emotional absorption. Those latter associations are interpretive, not medical diagnoses.


Pingala: the solar current

Pingala is traditionally associated with the right side and the Sun. Its symbolic field includes warmth, outward movement, vitality, discrimination, execution, effort, digestion, clarity and the power to act.

These qualities do not make Pingala aggressive. Daylight allows distinction: this path rather than that path, this action now, this boundary here. Pingala represents the intelligence that transforms intention into movement.

When the Pingala tendency is functionally available, a person may find it easier to decide, organize, communicate, metabolize experience and act with purpose. When a Pingala-like tendency becomes excessive or distorted, the person may experience agitation, irritability, overcontrol, relentless productivity or the inability to rest. Again, this is a traditional–psychological interpretation, not a neurological test.


What “Moon energy” and “Sun energy” mean here

In the traditional framework, these are modes of Prāṇa, not merely poetic decorations. For a scientifically inclined reader, they can also function as disciplined metaphors for recurring human polarities: cooling and warming, receiving and transforming, inward and outward, recovery and mobilization.

They should not be misreported as astronomical radiation or lunar gravity travelling through separate nostrils. No current instrument has detected a measurable “Moon energy” in Ida or “Sun energy” in Pingala. Respecting the traditional claim and respecting scientific measurement require clear language about which lens is speaking.


Sushumna: not another extreme, but the central possibility

Sushumna is the central Nāḍī in the yogic subtle-body model. It is not merely a compromise between “half Moon” and “half Sun.” It represents a change of condition: Prāṇa is no longer compelled to alternate only between the paired currents.

The Śiva Swarodaya places Ida on the left, Pingala on the right and Sushumna in the middle. Verses 49–50 state:

iḍā vāme ca vijñeyā piṅgalā dakṣiṇe smṛtā
iḍāyāṁ tu sthitaś candraḥ piṅgalāyāṁ ca bhāskaraḥ
suṣumnā śambhurūpeṇa śambhur haṁsasvarūpataḥ

In meaning: Ida is known on the left, Pingala on the right; the Moon abides in Ida, the Sun in Pingala, and Sushumna is described through Śambhu.1

This is authentic textual evidence for the lunar–solar mapping. It is not evidence that ancient yogis were naming the cerebral hemispheres.


The Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā begins its discussion of Prāṇa with a direct experiential proposition:

cale vāte calaṁ cittaṁ niścale niścalaṁ bhavet — “When the vital wind moves, the mind moves; when it becomes still, the mind becomes still.” (2.2)2

Later, verses 2.41–42 say that when the Nāḍī system has been prepared through disciplined Prāṇa regulation, the vital wind enters Sushumna, and when it moves in the middle, steadiness of mind arises.2

Chapter 4 makes the connection even more explicit: citte samatvam āpanne vāyau vrajati madhyame—when the mind has attained evenness and the vital wind moves in the middle.2

This gives us a classically grounded sequence:

regulated Prāṇa → the middle way becomes available → mental steadiness → Samatvam

It does not tell us that both cerebral hemispheres produce identical electrical power. Yogic “middle” and neurological “symmetry” are different concepts.


What Makes Kumbhak a Swara Yoga Practice? 🌬️


Swara means more than air coming through a nostril

In Swara Yoga, Swara is the living current expressed through breath. The practice begins with observation:

  • Which nostril feels more open now?
  • Is the flow left-dominant, right-dominant or nearly balanced?
  • How does it change with posture, time, activity, food, emotion and rest?
  • What happens at the transition from Pūrak to retention?
  • What happens at the transition from Rechak to retention?
  • Can awareness remain steady when the movement of breath pauses?

Swara Yoga therefore includes nasal flow, but it is not limited to nostril control. It studies the relationship between breath, time, element, action, Prāṇa and awareness.

The Śiva Swarodaya calls Ida, Pingala and Sushumna the three principal pathways through which Prāṇa’s movement should be observed (verses 48–50).1 The Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā likewise teaches a retention-containing alternate pathway practice and says its discipline prepares the Nāḍī system (2.7–10).2


The Ten-Step Kumbhak is Swara-aware without being alternate-nostril breathing

The Ten-Step practice uses both nostrils. You do not need to test which side is dominant, close a nostril or change the method according to a lunar calendar.

Its Swara Yoga dimension lies in four acts:

  1. Observing flow: nasal Pūrak and Rechak make the breath’s passage tangible.
  2. Observing direction: the center of the chest lifts with Pūrak and lowers with Rechak.
  3. Observing suspension: Antar Kumbhak and Bāhya Kumbhak reveal what remains when respiratory movement is temporarily absent.
  4. Observing return: two normal recovery breaths show whether the system returns with ease.

Patañjali defines Prāṇāyāma through an interruption or regulation of the movement of inhalation and exhalation in Yoga Sūtra 2.49. Sūtra 2.50 names external, internal and suspended modes, observed through place, time and number; 2.53 says the mind thereby becomes fit for concentration.3

The Ten-Step Kumbhak gives those ideas a stress-relief form: no maximum duration, no performance target, no demand for belief—only a brief, comfortable experiment followed by honest observation.


The quiet gap is the heart of the practice

Most stress reactions survive through momentum. A thought triggers a sensation. The sensation triggers another thought. The next message is sent before the previous emotion has even been felt.

Imagine receiving a sharp email late at night. Pingala-like energy wants to answer immediately. Ida-like energy may want to withdraw and replay every sentence until morning. Kumbhak introduces a third possibility: remain present long enough that reaction is no longer the only option.

That pause is not indecision. It is the recovery of choice.


The Scientific Nasal Cycle: Where Swara Yoga and Physiology Touch 🔬


One nostril commonly carries more airflow than the other

The human nose naturally changes its side-to-side openness. Blood flow alters the volume of erectile tissue around the turbinates, making one passage relatively more congested while the other is relatively more open. The balance later changes. This is the nasal cycle.5

A 24-hour measurement study found considerable individual variation. Average dominance phases were roughly two hours while awake and longer during sleep, but the patterns were not a perfect clock. Body position mattered: lying on one side was associated with more airflow through the opposite nostril.5

Long-term measurements also identify reciprocal, in-concert, one-sided, mixed and non-cycle patterns. In other words, real nasal physiology is more varied than a rule saying “the nostril switches every fixed number of minutes.”6

This confirms an observable fact central to Swara practice: nasal airflow changes over time. It does not confirm every prediction attached to Swara in later texts.


The autonomic nervous system participates, but the relationship is not a simple switch

Sympathetic activity can constrict nasal blood vessels and open a passage; parasympathetic activity can promote vasodilation and congestion. This makes the nasal cycle an autonomic phenomenon, though current models do not reduce it to one single driver.5

It is tempting to conclude:

right nostril = sympathetic = Pingala
left nostril = parasympathetic = Ida

Some studies report results compatible with this pattern. Other experiments find bilateral effects, sex-dependent effects, no hemispheric change or outcomes that depend strongly on breathing rate, effort and the chosen measurement. The safest conclusion is that nostril-regulated breathing can influence autonomic and cortical activity, but a universal one-nostril/one-branch law has not been established.


Nasal breathing can influence brain rhythms

Human intracranial recordings have shown that nasal respiration can entrain oscillatory activity in the piriform cortex, amygdala and hippocampus. In one influential study, respiratory phase also modulated emotion recognition and memory performance; the effects weakened with mouth breathing.8

This is important: the nose is not merely passive plumbing. Nasal airflow provides rhythmic sensory input capable of interacting with limbic and cognitive networks.

But the experiment did not show that Ida is a nerve, that Pingala is a hemisphere or that Kumbhak activates Sushumna. It supports a narrower bridge: how we breathe through the nose can shape brain activity and behaviour.


What happens during Kumbhak itself

During a closed-airway retention, metabolism continues. Carbon dioxide rises; oxygen may fall if the retention is long enough; chest pressure, heart rate, blood pressure, vascular resistance and cerebral blood flow can change. The size and direction of those changes depend on whether the pause follows Pūrak or Rechak, its duration, starting lung volume, prior breathing, posture and the individual.910

Direct Kumbhak studies have found:

  • A one-minute internal retention increased middle cerebral artery flow velocities in 15 experienced healthy men. This is acute physiology, not proof of better cognition.9
  • Four-phase breathing containing internal and external retentions changed cardiac output, baroreflex sensitivity and heart-rate-variability measures in a small study. The pattern was more complex than permanent “vagal dominance.”11
  • A Kumbhak-containing session improved a response-inhibition measure, but breath awareness improved it too; the retention sequence was not superior.12
  • An eight-week retention-containing addition to yoga improved reported mindfulness, mind wandering and anxiety in young practitioners, but it did not isolate which component caused the benefit.13

No study in this group measured Ida, Pingala or Sushumna, and none established total hemispheric balance.


Left Brain and Right Brain: A Complete, Evidence-Calibrated Map 🧠


First remove the myth without losing the truth

The myth says that some people are logical “left-brained” people while others are creative “right-brained” people. A resting-state functional-connectivity analysis of more than 1,000 people found no evidence for that global personality type. Lateralization occurs in particular networks and tasks, not as a whole-person brain identity.14

The truth beneath the myth is that hemispheric specialization is real. The two hemispheres are structurally similar but not functionally identical. They exchange information through the corpus callosum and other commissures, producing a unified experience from partly specialized processing.15

Balance therefore means coordination, not equality of every signal. A healthy orchestra does not require the violin and drum to make the same sound.


Left hemisphere: functions that are commonly left-lateralized

These are population-level tendencies, not rules for every person.

Language structure and production

  • Speech production, lexical retrieval, phonological processing, grammar and many aspects of verbal comprehension are commonly left-lateralized.
  • Language is left-dominant in most people. One large study found left dominance in 96% of strong right-handers, while bilateral or right dominance became more frequent as left-handedness increased.16
  • The right hemisphere still contributes to context, tone, discourse and interpretation; language is not confined to a single left-sided “language box.”

Sequential and local-detail processing

  • The left hemisphere often shows an advantage for local features within hierarchical visual patterns.
  • It is frequently more engaged when a task demands fine categorical distinctions, ordered steps or rapid temporal sequencing.
  • “Local” does not mean narrow-minded, and it does not make the left hemisphere the sole seat of logic.

Symbolic and exact operations

  • Learned arithmetic facts and retrieval-based exact calculations often recruit left-lateralized language-related systems.
  • Numerical magnitude, approximation, working memory and complex calculation use bilateral parietal and frontal networks. Modern reviews explicitly reject the claim that mathematics belongs to the left hemisphere alone.17

Skilled action planning

  • Praxis—the planning of learned, purposeful gestures and tool-use actions—is commonly left-lateralized, even when either hand performs the movement.18

Control of and sensation from the opposite side

  • Much motor and somatosensory organization is contralateral: the left hemisphere predominantly controls and receives information from the right side of the body.
  • This is not absolute. Many movements, especially posture, trunk control and coordinated actions, involve bilateral systems.

Approach-related tendencies: a qualified finding

  • Some frontal-asymmetry research associates relatively greater left frontal activity with approach motivation.
  • This is not the same as “the left brain is positive.” Anger can be approach-related; many emotions recruit networks on both sides. Emotion-lateralization models remain debated.19

Right hemisphere: functions that are commonly right-lateralized

Again, these are tendencies whose strength varies with task and person.

Spatial attention and environmental monitoring

  • Right-hemisphere networks make a particularly important contribution to broad spatial attention.
  • Right-hemisphere injury can produce severe neglect of the left side of space; corresponding neglect after left-hemisphere injury is generally less frequent or persistent.20
  • Visuospatial construction, orientation and some mental-rotation demands often show rightward bias, but these tasks still recruit both hemispheres.

Global and configural processing

  • The right hemisphere often shows an advantage for the global form—the “forest”—while the left has a relative advantage for local components—the “trees.”
  • Context, stimulus size, attention and task demands can change or reverse the effect. It is a processing bias, not an immutable philosophy of mind.21

Faces and socially meaningful visual patterns

  • Face identity and configural face processing often recruit a right-biased occipitotemporal network.
  • Emotional-face processing is not simply right-sided; the amygdala and cortical networks can be bilateral or task-dependent.

Prosody, pitch and nonverbal vocal information

  • The right hemisphere often contributes strongly to emotional prosody, voice melody and pitch patterns.
  • Temporal and linguistic aspects of prosody also involve the left hemisphere. Meta-analyses find overlapping bilateral networks rather than one “tone hemisphere.”22

Novel meanings, broad semantic fields and discourse

  • The right hemisphere can assist with distant semantic associations, discourse-level coherence and some novel metaphors.
  • Familiar metaphors and many figurative-language tasks rely heavily on the left or on bilateral networks. The claim that all metaphor, intuition or humour lives on the right is unsupported.23

Music: a division of contributions, not a right-brain possession

  • Pitch and melodic contour can show rightward biases; aspects of rhythm and learned symbolic structure can show leftward biases.
  • Listening, performing and composing music recruit widespread bilateral auditory, motor, emotional, memory and prediction networks.24

Withdrawal-related tendencies: a qualified finding

  • Some frontal-asymmetry models associate relatively greater right frontal activity with withdrawal motivation.
  • This does not mean the right hemisphere is fearful, negative or passive. Emotional life is networked, dynamic and dependent on context.19

Functions that belong to the whole brain

The following abilities cannot honestly be assigned to one hemisphere:

  • Creativity: idea generation, evaluation, memory, imagery, language, motor skill and emotional value interact across distributed networks.
  • Logic and reasoning: different reasoning steps recruit frontal, parietal, temporal and subcortical systems on both sides.
  • Emotion: feeling, bodily arousal, meaning, memory, regulation and expression are not housed in one half.
  • Intuition: rapid pattern learning draws on past experience across sensory, emotional and associative systems.
  • Attention: alerting, orienting and executive attention use partially distinct bilateral networks with some asymmetries.
  • Memory: encoding, consolidation and retrieval depend on hippocampal and cortical systems in both hemispheres.
  • Consciousness and selfhood: no credible evidence identifies one hemisphere as the spiritual side or the sole location of the self.
  • Stress regulation: threat appraisal, autonomic control, endocrine signalling, interoception and executive regulation form a brain–body network.

The corpus callosum does not merely make two sides “equal.” Depending on task and pathway, interhemispheric communication can facilitate, coordinate or inhibit. That flexible cooperation is a better scientific analogy for Samatvam than equal activation.15


Does Left-Nostril Breathing Activate the Right Brain—and Vice Versa? ⚖️


Why the idea is plausible

Each nasal cavity provides sensory input. The nasal cycle has autonomic associations. Much sensory and motor organization crosses sides. Early small EEG studies reported that forced unilateral nostril breathing increased relative EEG amplitude in the opposite hemisphere.25

Later studies found particular cognitive or event-related-potential changes after right- or left-nostril practices. A 2022 crossover EEG study in 30 participants also found nostril-related spectral changes, though the pattern included both localized and diffuse bilateral effects.26

So the hypothesis deserves investigation.


Why the claim is not settled

The literature is inconsistent:

  • An early performance experiment found an association between natural nasal asymmetry and task performance, but forced unilateral breathing did not change performance.27
  • Another study of untrained participants did not support the proposed hemispheric activation changes.28
  • A pilot trial of left-nostril breathing found no advantage over breath awareness for attention, executive function or memory.29
  • A 13-person crossover study of alternate-nostril breathing found no change in cerebral hemisphere symmetry on EEG, even though some frequency-band measures changed.30
  • Results can depend on sex, handedness, baseline nostril dominance, task, breathing effort, previous training and analytic method.

Therefore, “left nostril switches on right brain” and “right nostril switches on left brain” are hypotheses with partial, mixed support—not established laws.


Why the Ten-Step Kumbhak does not need this claim

The Ten-Step practice uses both nostrils and does not promise selective hemispheric activation. Its credible value does not depend on a one-nostril/one-hemisphere equation.

It can cultivate:

  • sustained attention to one body location;
  • awareness of changing internal sensations;
  • inhibition of an immediate reaction during a comfortable pause;
  • completion of both receiving and releasing phases;
  • return to normal breathing without grasping for a stronger effect;
  • honest evaluation of whether stress feels lower, unchanged or higher afterward.

These are whole-system skills. They may involve lateralized contributions, but they require cooperation across the brain.


The Ayurvedic View: Soma, Agni, Vāta and the Meaning of Balance 🌿


Ayurveda’s lunar and solar language

Ayurveda often understands life through paired functional principles. Saumya qualities are lunar, cooling and nourishing; Āgneya qualities are fiery, heating and transforming. The Suśruta Saṁhitā describes the world through Saumya and Āgneya tendencies and explicitly calls Saumya cool and Āgneya hot.31

This does not mean Ida is simply Kapha or Pingala is simply Pitta. Classical Haṭha and Swara texts provide the Ida–Pingala mapping; classical Ayurveda provides its own language of Doṣa, Guṇa, Agni, Dhātu, Mala and mind. Later teachers often place these systems beside one another, but the correspondences must not be presented as identical classifications.

Used carefully, the analogy is illuminating:

Ida–Soma tendency

  • receiving;
  • cooling;
  • moistening and nourishing;
  • stabilizing;
  • restoring;
  • consolidating what has been experienced.

Pingala–Agni tendency

  • warming;
  • transforming;
  • discriminating;
  • mobilizing;
  • digesting;
  • converting potential into action.

A meal cannot nourish without both containment and transformation. A mind cannot mature through experience without both feeling and discrimination.


Prāṇa Vāta makes the breath–mind connection especially relevant

The Caraka Saṁhitā describes Prāṇa Vāta as situated in the head, chest, throat, tongue, mouth and nose, with respiration and swallowing among its functions.32 Udāna, Samāna, Vyāna and Apāna describe other directional and functional organizations of Vāta.

The Ten-Step Kumbhak can therefore be contemplated through an Ayurvedic lens as a disciplined conversation among directions:

  • Pūrak receives and lifts through the chest center.
  • Antar Kumbhak contains without rigidity.
  • Rechak releases and lowers through the chest center.
  • Bāhya Kumbhak remains with emptiness without forcibly drawing the abdomen inward.
  • Recovery breaths re-establish ordinary movement.

It would be too strong to claim that these steps clinically “balance the five Vāyus.” That has not been tested, and the method does not diagnose Vāyu disorders. It is more accurate to say that its directional structure is compatible with an Ayurvedic concern for unimpeded, properly directed movement.


Sattva is not sleepiness, and Rajas is not healthy action

Ayurvedic and Sāṁkhya-informed psychology distinguishes Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. Rajas drives movement and disturbance; Tamas contributes heaviness, concealment and inertia; Sattva allows clarity and steadiness.

These must not be pasted mechanically onto the Nāḍīs:

  • Ida is not always Tamas.
  • Pingala is not always Rajas.
  • Sushumna is not a brain scan of Sattva.

The useful question is functional: Does lunar receptivity remain clear, or has it become dullness? Does solar action remain purposeful, or has it become agitation? Sattva is the clarity through which both can serve rather than rule the person.


Ayurvedic health is dynamic Samatvam

The famous definition in Suśruta Saṁhitā, Sūtrasthāna 15.41, describes health through balanced Doṣas, Agni, Dhātus and Malas together with a clear, contented self, senses and mind.33

That is not a demand that every variable become numerically identical. A healthy Agni must transform; a healthy Kapha must stabilize; a healthy Vāta must move. Balance means each principle performs its appropriate function, in appropriate measure, at the appropriate time.

This is also the most useful meaning of Ida–Pingala balance.


How Each of the Ten Steps Trains Practical Samatvam 🪷


Before beginning: replace ambition with accuracy

Sit safely. Inhalation and exhalation remain normal—not too fast and not artificially extended. “Full” means comfortably full or comfortably empty. Keep the first retentions deliberately brief.

This first decision already balances Pingala’s appetite for achievement with Ida’s capacity to listen.


Step 1: posture—alertness without hardness

Sit on a chair, cushion or the floor. Let the back be naturally upright without stiffness. Soften the face and jaw; let the shoulders drop.

Solar quality: uprightness, presence, readiness.
Lunar quality: ease, receptivity, absence of armour.
Balance learned: structure does not require tension.


Step 2: Dhyāna Mudrā—two hands, one supported field

At the lowest center of the front torso, place the open left hand on top of the open right hand, both palms upward. Let the body-facing edges rest directly against the body so the hands are supported from underneath and within. Bring the thumbs toward one another and touch the upper portions of their soft thumbprint pads—not the nails or very tips.

Rather than suspending the hands in effort, the body receives their weight. Rather than leaving the two sides separate, the thumbs complete a quiet circuit. This is a physical image of cooperation without force.


Step 3: first Pūrak—receive without taking too much

Inhale normally through the nose by lifting the center of the chest until comfortably full. Keep the shoulders down. Do not arch the back or gulp air.

Solar quality: lift and wakefulness.
Lunar quality: receiving what arrives.
Balance learned: fullness does not require excess.


Step 4: Antar Kumbhak—strength without bracing

Keep the center of the chest lifted and hold while the air remains inside. Relax the face, throat, chest, shoulders and abdomen. End while the retention is completely easy and while at least a three-second reserve still feels certain.

Solar quality: containment and steadiness.
Lunar quality: non-interference and inward listening.
Balance learned: capacity is not proved by reaching a limit.


Step 5: first Rechak—release without collapse

Exhale normally through the nose by lowering the center of the chest until comfortably empty. Keep the back naturally upright and do not force out air.

Lunar quality: release, return and settling.
Solar quality: completing the action clearly.
Balance learned: letting go is an action, not a defeat.


Steps 6 and 7: normal Pūrak and Rechak—do not worship the pause

Inhale normally by lifting the chest center, with no retention afterward. Then exhale normally by lowering it.

This pair prevents Kumbhak from becoming fascination with stillness. Life includes movement. The practice returns to ordinary Pūrak and Rechak before approaching emptiness.

Balance learned: the pause serves life; life does not serve the pause.


Step 8: Bāhya Kumbhak—emptiness without fear

With the center of the chest lowered and the lungs comfortably empty, retain without pulling the abdomen inward. Keep the whole body relaxed. Begin the next Pūrak while the pause remains completely easy and the three-second reserve remains certain.

Lunar quality: openness to silence and non-possession.
Solar quality: wakeful courage inside the silence.
Balance learned: emptiness can be inhabited without collapse.


Step 9: final Pūrak and Rechak—complete the round

Inhale normally by lifting the chest center; then exhale normally by lowering it. One Kumbhak round is complete.

Completion matters. An anxious mind often leaves one experience unfinished while racing into the next. The final Pūrak and Rechak close the circle.


Step 10: two normal breaths—recovery is part of mastery

Take two normal breaths. Only after the second normal Rechak may another round begin.

These breaths are not empty waiting. They reveal the after-effect:

  • Is the next Pūrak smooth and ordinary?
  • Is there a hidden gasp?
  • Did the jaw tighten?
  • Does the chest feel settled?
  • Is the mind quieter, clearer, unchanged or uncomfortable?

The honest answer is more valuable than a promised result.


From Nervous-System Flexibility to Emotional Balance ❤️‍🩹


Balance is the ability to change state and return

A nervous system is not healthy because it remains parasympathetic all day. You need mobilization to cross a road, defend a boundary, solve a problem or care for someone in danger. You need restoration to digest, sleep, connect and repair.

The healthier question is not “Which branch is permanently dominant?” It is:

Can I activate when action is required, settle when the demand has passed and avoid mistaking every sensation for an emergency?

That is autonomic flexibility. It is also a useful scientific analogy for the alternation of Pingala and Ida around a stable center.


Kumbhak and the moment before reaction

A comfortable retention can become a small exposure to respiratory stillness. The practitioner notices an urge without immediately obeying it, yet ends the pause before strain. Over time, that may train a more discerning relationship to internal sensation.

Research on Kumbhak-specific stress relief is still limited. Retention-containing breathing methods sometimes improve stress or anxiety, but active controls frequently improve too, and longer retentions have not been shown to be better. For people with panic or suffocation-related trauma, a pause can increase distress rather than reduce it.34

The three-second reserve is therefore not merely a safety detail. It protects the emotional meaning of the practice: the pause remains chosen.


A four-part self-observation after practice

Do not tell yourself that Kumbhak must have balanced you. Ask:

Body: Is there less jaw, shoulder or chest tension—or more?
Breath: Has normal breathing returned without a gasp?
Mind: Is attention clearer, duller, restless or unchanged?
Action: Is the next decision less impulsive and more appropriate?

This turns belief into a voluntary experiment. Different responses remain valid.


“Samatvam Yoga Uchyate”: What Total Balance Really Means ⚖️


The verified verse

Bhagavad Gītā 2.48 reads:

yogasthaḥ kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā dhanañjaya
siddhyasiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvaṁ yoga ucyate

In meaning: Established in Yoga, perform action without attachment, remaining even in success and failure; this evenness is called Yoga.4

The familiar phrase “Samatvam Yogam Uchyate” points to this teaching, though the Sanskrit verse itself reads samatvaṁ yoga ucyate.


Samatvam is not emotional numbness

Equanimity does not mean that success and failure feel identical. It does not ask a grieving person to become indifferent or an injured person to stop seeking justice. It means that the outcome does not seize the entire mind and dictate the worth of the self.

Kumbhak offers a bodily rehearsal:

  • Fullness comes; do not become intoxicated by it.
  • Emptiness comes; do not become terrified by it.
  • Movement returns; do not cling to stillness.
  • A round ends; do not chase a record.

The breath changes. Awareness learns not to fall with every change.


Four meanings of “total balance”

Yogic balance: Prāṇa is not trapped in the alternating compulsion of Ida and Pingala; the central possibility becomes available.

Psychological balance: thought, feeling, action and restraint can each contribute without one hijacking the whole person.

Neurological balance: specialized networks communicate flexibly; it is not equal electrical activity in both hemispheres.

Ayurvedic balance: each functional principle performs its appropriate role in appropriate measure; it is not a static fifty–fifty mixture.

Total balance is therefore responsive wholeness.


The balance test occurs after the cushion

The truest evidence of Samatvam is not a sensation during retention. It appears later:

  • Can you listen without preparing a defence?
  • Can you act without attacking?
  • Can you rest without guilt?
  • Can you say no without hatred?
  • Can you receive praise without becoming dependent on it?
  • Can you meet failure without declaring yourself a failure?

If the pause helps even one of these become possible, it has begun to enter life.


Frequently Asked Questions About Kumbhak, Ida–Pingala and Brain Balance ❓


Does Kumbhak scientifically balance Ida and Pingala?

No scientific instrument currently measures Ida or Pingala as yogic Nāḍīs. Kumbhak has measurable cardiorespiratory and cerebrovascular effects, but translating those directly into “Nāḍī balance” would exceed the evidence. Ida–Pingala balance remains a traditional yogic interpretation.


Is Ida the right brain and Pingala the left brain?

Not literally. The Śiva Swarodaya places Ida on the left and Pingala on the right and associates them with Moon and Sun. It does not identify them with cerebral hemispheres. The common cross-hemisphere mapping is a modern analogy influenced by contralateral brain organization and nostril-breathing studies.


Does Kumbhak synchronize both brain hemispheres?

That has not been demonstrated for the Ten-Step Kumbhak. Alternate-nostril EEG research is mixed, and one small crossover study found no change in hemisphere symmetry. The more defensible claim is that breath regulation recruits distributed brain–body processes and may support attention and self-regulation.


Is the Ten-Step Kumbhak the same as Nāḍī Śodhana?

No. Nāḍī Śodhana commonly regulates breath through alternating nostrils. The Ten-Step Kumbhak keeps both nostrils available, uses normal Pūrak and Rechak, includes both Antar and Bāhya Kumbhak, focuses on the center of the chest and takes two normal recovery breaths after every round.


Is it still Swara Yoga if neither nostril is closed?

Yes in the broad, foundational sense of observing the movement, direction, suspension and return of Swara. It is not a complete enactment of every nostril-, element- or calendar-based prescription in the Śiva Swarodaya.


What if one nostril feels more blocked?

Some asymmetry is normal because of the nasal cycle. Do not force air or struggle to make both sides equal. Persistent obstruction, pain, recurrent bleeding, severe allergy symptoms or difficulty breathing deserves evaluation by an appropriate healthcare professional.


How long should the two retentions be?

There is no fixed number for this stress-relief method. Both pauses remain deliberately brief at first and end while completely easy, with a certain reserve of at least three more comfortable seconds. Never test your maximum.


How many rounds should a beginner practise?

Begin with one normal round. If it remains completely comfortable, a few more may be tried. Do not add rounds or lengthen the retentions to chase a stronger result.


Can I use right-nostril breathing for work and left-nostril breathing for sleep?

Those are traditional applications with some preliminary physiological support, but results are not universal and the evidence is mixed. They should not be treated as guaranteed switches. The Ten-Step Kumbhak does not require unilateral breathing.


Does bilateral nostril flow prove Sushumna is open?

No. Nearly equal airflow can occur as part of ordinary nasal physiology. In Swara Yoga it may be interpreted as a central transition; scientifically it is a measurement of airflow, not proof of subtle-channel activation or spiritual attainment.


Can Kumbhak replace treatment for anxiety, hypertension or a neurological condition?

No. It may be a supportive stress-relief practice for suitable people, but it is not a replacement for diagnosis, medication, psychotherapy or other prescribed care.


Traditional Swara and Yogic Claims Not Yet Scientifically Verified 🌌

This section preserves the breadth of the traditional vision without presenting it as laboratory fact. The claims below appear in Swara, Haṭha or later interpretive traditions in varying forms. Modern research has not validated them as a complete predictive or medical system.


Traditional qualities assigned to the three Swaras

Ida or Chandra Swara is traditionally associated with:

  • the left side or left nostril;
  • the Moon, cooling and inward movement;
  • receptivity, rest, nourishment, reflection and mental activity;
  • Śakti in Śiva Swarodaya verse 52;
  • auspiciousness for many peaceful, relational, receptive or stabilizing activities in Swara manuals.

Pingala or Surya Swara is traditionally associated with:

  • the right side or right nostril;
  • the Sun, warmth and outward movement;
  • vitality, digestion, discrimination, effort and decisive action;
  • Śambhu in Śiva Swarodaya verse 52;
  • suitability for many demanding, forceful, technical, physical or confrontational activities in Swara manuals.

Sushumna or Madhya Swara is traditionally associated with:

  • the central pathway;
  • transitional or bilateral nostril flow;
  • suspension of ordinary worldly momentum;
  • Yoga, meditation, liberation and inward practice;
  • a time considered unsuitable in some Swara verses for ordinary gain-seeking activity but suitable for remembrance of the Divine and yogic practice (verses 124–132).1

These symbolic and practice-based associations have not been verified as fixed physiological laws.


Traditional timing, lunar and elemental claims

The Śiva Swarodaya also describes:

  • expected Ida–Pingala patterns across waxing and waning lunar fortnights;
  • particular sequences around sunrise and groups of days;
  • weekday associations;
  • five elemental phases—earth, water, fire, air and space—within the Swara;
  • methods of inferring an element from perceived direction, reach, quality, taste, colour or shape;
  • predictions about whether an undertaking will succeed according to Swara and element.

Small observational research has not established a reliable lunar schedule for nostril dominance. Modern 24- and 48-hour nasal measurements instead show wide variation related to sleep, posture and individual physiology.57


Traditional activity and predictive claims

Swara texts extend their system to the timing of journeys, meetings, study, trade, meals, medicine, conflict, intimacy, agriculture, ritual and other actions. They also contain prognostic or divinatory claims concerning illness, pregnancy, the sex of a child, victory, misfortune and remaining lifespan.

These claims are part of the received textual tradition. They have not been scientifically verified and should not guide medical treatment, pregnancy decisions, safety-critical action, financial choices or judgments about another person’s future. Some reflect the social world and assumptions of the text’s historical setting rather than universal ethical guidance.


Traditional claims about Nāḍī purification and Sushumna

Classical Haṭha texts state that disciplined Prāṇa practices purify the Nāḍīs, enable Prāṇa to enter Sushumna, steady the mind and support higher yogic states.2 These are central yogic truth-claims grounded in a subtle-body framework.

Science can measure airflow, blood gases, brain waves, cerebral circulation, heart dynamics and reported experience. It has not measured a purified Nāḍī or verified Sushumna as an anatomical channel. Absence of that measurement does not erase the traditional framework; it means the framework should be named honestly.


Traditional Ayurvedic connections

Later integrated teachings may correlate:

  • Ida/Soma with cooling, nourishment, Kapha-like stability or inward mental processes;
  • Pingala/Agni with heat, digestion, Pitta-like transformation or outward activity;
  • disturbed alternation with Vāta irregularity;
  • central balance with Sattva.

These can be meaningful contemplative correspondences. They are not direct one-to-one equations established across the classical Ayurvedic Saṁhitās, and they are not validated diagnostic tools. A person should not infer a Doṣa disorder, brain imbalance or disease from one morning’s dominant nostril.


Safety: Balance Can Never Be Built Through Strain ⚠️


Stop immediately if discomfort appears

Return to natural breathing if you experience dizziness, light-headedness, faintness, unusual breathlessness, chest pain or tightness, panic, tingling, visual disturbance, severe headache, palpitations, confusion or any other discomfort.

Do not resume until breathing and the whole body feel completely normal. Seek appropriate medical care if a serious or unusual symptom persists.


Where never to practise

Practise seated in a stable, safe place. Never practise retention while driving, swimming, bathing, operating machinery, walking somewhere unsafe or doing anything that requires full attention. Never hyperventilate before a retention or use it to extend duration; that can delay the warning urge to breathe and increase blackout risk.35


Who should obtain individual guidance first

People with heart or lung conditions should consult a qualified healthcare professional before breath retention. The same precaution is appropriate for significant blood-pressure, neurological, fainting, pregnancy-related, retinal, glaucoma, panic-related or trauma-related concerns, and after recent surgery.

If retention itself feels threatening, use a suitable breathing practice without a pause rather than forcing Kumbhak.


Conclusion: The Two Currents Are Not Enemies 🌙☀️

The Moon is not asked to become the Sun. The Sun is not asked to become the Moon. The right hemisphere does not become healthy by copying the left, and the left does not become whole by disappearing into the right.

Balance is relationship.

The Ten-Step Kumbhak places receiving, containing, releasing, emptiness, completion and recovery around one attentive center. Yogically, this can be contemplated as Ida and Pingala becoming less compelling so that the middle becomes knowable. Ayurvedically, it evokes the cooperation of nourishment and transformation. Scientifically, it is a structured brain–breath–body practice whose exact hemispheric effects remain unproven but whose cardiorespiratory and attentional ingredients are biologically meaningful.

And in the language of the Bhagavad Gītā, the measure is not what happened to the airflow alone. The measure is whether you can return to action with less attachment to victory, less terror of failure and more freedom to do what the moment truly requires.

The breath becomes full, and you remain. The breath becomes empty, and you remain. Between Moon and Sun, that remaining is the beginning of Samatvam.
