A goldsmith does not balance a scale by throwing away one pan. The second pan is what makes balance possible.
The same quiet intelligence lives in the hand position of the Ten-Step Kumbhak. Breath retention can feel warming, concentrating and activating. The left hand—traditionally associated with Iḍā, the moon and cooling receptivity—rests over the right hand, traditionally associated with Piṅgalā, the sun and active warmth. The intention is not to defeat the sun but to temper it; not to make the body cold but to keep intensity from becoming excess.
That is why the official name of this hand position is Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra.
The name removes a real ambiguity. A widely recognised Buddhist form called Dhyāna Mudra often places the right hand over the left. The Ten-Step Kumbhak has always prescribed the reverse: the left palm over the right palm. In modern yoga-mudra literature, that reversal is precisely what distinguishes Bhairavī Mudra from Bhairava Mudra.12
The compound name therefore says exactly what the hands are doing:
- Bhairavī identifies the left-over-right order and its lunar, receptive emphasis.
- Dhyāna identifies the supported meditative bowl, inward steadiness and contact between the two thumbs.
- Mudra identifies a deliberate seal or gesture that helps body, attention and breath remain in one coherent arrangement.
The exact Ten-Step form adds an important refinement: the soft upper portions of the thumbprint pads touch each other. The nails and extreme thumb tips do not meet.
This article explains why every part of that instruction matters. It presents the historical evidence, traditional yogic reasoning, Ayurveda and marma distinctions, hand-reflexology correspondences, anatomy, touch science, stress physiology and the limits of present research. The left hand does not extinguish the right. The moon rests above the sun so that warmth may remain useful without becoming excess.
The Short Answer: Why the Left Hand Is Over the Right 🌙☀️
The Ten-Step Kumbhak uses Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra for nine connected reasons:
- The name matches the hand order. Modern yoga-mudra manuals describe left-over-right as Bhairavī Mudra and right-over-left as Bhairava Mudra.12
- The order has genuine contemplative precedent. Official Sōtō Zen instructions also place the left palm over the right in the Cosmic Mudra or hokkai-jōin, with the thumbs meeting lightly.3
- It removes confusion with a common Buddhist convention. Important Buddhist images and museum descriptions show Dhyāna Mudra with the right hand above the left.4
- It gives traditional priority to the lunar principle. Yogic texts place Iḍā on the left and associate it with the moon; Piṅgalā is on the right and associated with the sun.6
- It traditionally moderates the warming tendency of retention. In the Ten-Step method, the cooling moon hand rests above the warming sun hand as a balancing design choice—not as proof of a measurable temperature change.
- It supports the hands, wrists and forearms low in the lap. This reduces the need to hold the arms in space and may make it easier for the shoulders and upper chest to remain free of avoidable effort.7
- It reduces fidgeting and decision-making. The hands keep one unchanged position while the respiratory phase changes.
- The thumb pads provide a precise tactile anchor. Human thumb pads are highly sensitive surfaces, so light contact can remain perceptible without strong pressure.8
- Its meaning does not depend on a medical claim. A practitioner may value the yogic lunar–solar explanation, the meditative symbolism, the ergonomic support, the tactile cue—or all of them—without being told that touching the hands has been clinically proved to treat stress.
The most careful conclusion is:
Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra is a traditionally coherent, historically defensible, ergonomically plausible and attentively useful component of the Ten-Step Kumbhak. Its independent medical effect, and the physiological superiority of left-over-right over right-over-left, have not yet been established in controlled human research.
The Official Naming: Not Just Dhyāna Mudra But Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra 🪷
Details of the Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra
- both palms face upward;
- the open right hand forms the lower support;
- the open left hand rests on top of the right;
- both hands rest at the lowest centre of the front of the torso, where the lower abdomen meets the lap;
- the inner, body-facing edges of the hands rest directly against the body so the hands are supported from below and from the inner side;
- the fingers remain open and at rest rather than gripping;
- the thumbs approach each other;
- the soft upper portions of the thumbprint pads—opposite the thumbnails and immediately below the extreme tips—meet lightly;
- the nails do not touch;
- and the extreme tips do not balance against each other.
The mudra remains in place throughout the complete round, including Antar Kumbhak, Bāhya Kumbhak, every normal Pūrak and Rechak, and the three normal recovery breaths.
Why is it called Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra
“Dhyāna Mudra” is not one universally standardised hand diagram. The name travels through Hindu, Buddhist and modern yoga contexts, and those contexts do not always agree about which hand belongs above the other or whether the thumbs touch.
For many readers, the most familiar Dhyāna Mudra is the Buddhist iconographic form in which the right palm rests over the left. A second- to third-century Gandhāran sculpture fragment catalogued by the British Museum is described in that order.4 A reader who knows that convention could reasonably look at the Ten-Step instruction—left over right—and wonder whether it is reversed by mistake.
It is not a mistake. It is a different, also well-attested contemplative order.
Knowing the Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra makes the distinction visible before doubt has time to grow.
Why the compound name is more exact than either word alone
Calling it only Bhairavī Mudra would establish the hand order but leave the thumb contact unclear. Some yoga descriptions of Bhairava and Bhairavī Mudra simply collect the hands and thumbs without forming the familiar meditative thumb connection.1
Calling it only Dhyāna Mudra would establish its contemplative family but leave the hand order ambiguous.
The compound name preserves both truths:
Bhairavī = left palm uppermost.
Dhyāna = meditative support and united thumbs.
The Ten-Step specification = upper thumbprint pads, not nails or extreme tips.
This is an operational name for one precise component of the Ten-Step Kumbhak. It should not be projected backwards as though every historical text or lineage has always used the exact phrase “Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra.”
Does “Bhairavī” make a stress-relief practice fierce?
In the Bhairava–Bhairavī pair, the names carry Śiva–Śakti and masculine–feminine symbolism in yoga-mudra teaching.12 “Fierce” here need not mean aggressive, frightening or physically harsh. It can be understood as the power to remain present when habit, fear or agitation would ordinarily seize the hands and breath.
The word Dhyāna is important beside it. Bhairavī supplies the left-over-right Śakti order; Dhyāna places that power in contemplative stillness. For an universal practitioner, the name may function simply as the exact technical label for this hand arrangement. No belief is required to use it.
“Dhyāna” names a direction of attention, not an automatic achievement
Patañjali defines Dhyāna as the continuity of cognition or attention in Yoga Sūtra 3.2.27 A hand gesture may help prepare that continuity; it cannot guarantee it.
A person can form a visually perfect Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra while worrying, competing or forcing the thumbs. Conversely, a person whose arthritis requires a modified hand position may still possess deep attention.
The mudra serves Dhyāna when it reduces distraction and effort. It does not manufacture Dhyāna by geometry alone.
The Historical Proof for Left Over Right 📜
The strongest case does not rest on one picture or one modern teacher. It rests on several converging forms of evidence that must be kept distinct.
Proof 1: Yoga-mudra literature calls left-over-right Bhairavī
Cain and Revital Carroll’s Mudras of India: A Comprehensive Guide to the Hand Gestures of Yoga and Indian Dance describes Bhairava Mudra with the right hand on top of the left, then states that its female counterpart, Bhairavī Mudra, is formed by placing the left palm on top of the right.1
The book also interprets the left and right hands through Iḍā and Piṅgalā, the lunar and solar channels. That does not make the subtle-body model a biomedical discovery. It does show that the Ten-Step Kumbhak’s terminology and hand order belong to an established stream of modern yoga-mudra transmission rather than to an arbitrary reversal.
Swami Satyananda Saraswati’s widely used Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha presents the same distinction: right-over-left is Bhairava; reversing the hands so the left rests above the right is Bhairavī.2
This is the most direct answer to the naming question.
Proof 2: Left-over-right is standard in an important meditation lineage
The Sōtō Zen Buddhism International Center’s official zazen instructions prescribe the Cosmic Mudra (hokkai-jōin) by placing the right hand palm-up below and the left hand palm-up on the right palm, while the thumb tips touch lightly.3
That is not a yogic proof of the name Bhairavī. It is independent historical proof that:
- left-over-right is a legitimate contemplative arrangement;
- joined thumbs can accompany that order;
- the form is not a recent error;
- and serious meditation traditions may preserve different hand conventions.
The Ten-Step Kumbhak is not claiming to teach zazen. The comparison simply prevents a false binary in which right-over-left is labelled “authentic” and left-over-right “wrong.”
The evidence should not be stretched into the claim that every Zen school always uses the same hand form. The official Sōtō instruction is clear; Rinzai teaching and local zendo practice can vary. Sōtō provides sufficient independent evidence for left-over-right without turning a lineage-specific form into a universal Zen rule.
Proof 3: Right-over-left remains authentic too
The British Museum’s Gandhāran example shows why the added word Bhairavī is needed. The right-over-left Buddhist form has real historical weight.4
The evidence therefore does not support saying:
“All correct Dhyāna Mudras place the left hand over the right.”
It supports saying:
“Both orders have authentic contemplative precedent. The Ten-Step Kumbhak deliberately chooses the left-over-right Bhairavī order and names it accordingly.”
Credibility grows when a tradition’s neighbours are represented fairly.
The thumb arrangement also varies within Buddhist iconography. Art-historical sources describe right-over-left Dhyāna Mudra with the thumbs sometimes remaining parallel and sometimes angling towards each other to form a triangle. In some Buddhist interpretations that triangle represents the Triratna—the Buddha, Dharma and Saṅgha—while the overlapping hands can signify the relation of skilful means (upāya) and wisdom (prajñā).5
These are important traditional meanings, not evidence that only one thumb geometry is valid. Their relevance here is more precise: they show why Dhyāna contributes a contemplative and unitive dimension to the compound name, while Bhairavī removes uncertainty about which palm is uppermost.
Proof 4: The exact Ten-Step form is a deliberate synthesis
No verified ancient verse has been located that gives the whole Ten-Step hand specification in one sentence—left palm over right, palms upward, supported against the lower torso, and upper thumbprint pads touching.
The complete form is better understood as a careful synthesis:
- the left-over-right order is supported by Bhairavī Mudra teaching;
- the meditative bowl and joined thumbs are supported by Dhyāna/Cosmic Mudra traditions;
- the lower-centre support serves the biomechanics of the Ten-Step practice;
- and the upper thumbprint-pad contact makes the tactile instruction more stable and reproducible.
This distinction matters. Tradition is honoured by naming the actual sources of each element, not by inventing an ancient quotation that contains them all.
The Yogic Reason: Moon Above Sun, Receptivity Above Activation 🌙
The classical left–moon and right–sun map
The Śāṇḍilya Upaniṣad gives unusually direct evidence. It places Iḍā to the left of Suṣumṇā and Piṅgalā to the right, then states: “The moon moves in Iḍā and the sun in Piṅgalā.”6
This is a subtle-body teaching. In its own yogic language:
- Iḍā is left-sided and lunar;
- Piṅgalā is right-sided and solar;
- the moon carries cooling, receptive, nourishing and inward associations;
- the sun carries warming, active, illuminating and outward associations;
- and yoga seeks relationship and integration rather than permanent victory of one side over the other.
Later yoga-mudra teaching extends that left–right symbolism to the hands. Thus the left hand becomes the moon hand, and the right hand the sun hand.1
This extension is traditional and internally coherent. It is not the same kind of claim as saying that a dissectible lunar nerve runs through the left palm.
Why the moon hand is placed above the sun hand
In Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra, the left lunar hand does not merely touch the right solar hand; it rests above it.
For the Ten-Step Kumbhak, that order expresses four intentions:
- Cooling moderates warming. Retention can be experienced as concentrating and heat-producing. Lunar placement gives the practice a traditional counterweight.
- Receptivity rests over action. Stress is already full of doing, gripping and preparing. The upper hand embodies receiving rather than pursuing.
- Containment rests over propulsion. Piṅgalā’s active symbolism remains present as the lower support, but Iḍā’s quieting symbolism becomes the upper influence.
- Neither polarity is excluded. Both hands remain open, joined and supported. Balance is not created by amputating half of experience.
This is why “left over right” is not a trivial photographic preference. It carries the method’s traditional logic.
Is Kumbhak always warming?
Not every Kumbhak in the enormous Haṭha Yoga tradition is described identically. The Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā includes practices associated with increased bodily or digestive fire, while Śītalī is explicitly presented as a cooling Kumbhak.910 The Śāṇḍilya Upaniṣad also associates mastery of Kevala Kumbhak with increased gastric fire.11
Therefore, the claim must be precise:
- It is reasonable within traditional yoga to describe many retention practices, and retention as an intensifying act, as warming or activating.
- It would be inaccurate to claim that every named Kumbhak is uniformly heating.
- It is also inaccurate to claim that the Ten-Step Kumbhak has been shown by clinical thermometry to raise core temperature.
The Ten-Step method uses the lunar-over-solar hand order as a traditional balancing principle for the potentially warming, concentrating quality of retention. That is the rationale. It is not a promise that the mudra will prevent sweating, alter Pitta in every constitution or produce a measurable fall in temperature.
What “balance” means here
The word can become vague unless its layers are named.
In yogic language, balance means a non-conflicting relationship among Iḍā and Piṅgalā, lunar and solar qualities, receptivity and action, stillness and vitality.
In the design of the practice, balance means that the hands remain quiet while the breath phase changes, the arms are supported while the chest remains available, and the touch remains perceptible without becoming pressure.
In lived experience, balance may mean that a practitioner feels alert without agitation, contained without rigidity, and quiet without dullness.
In medical science, none of those descriptions proves autonomic balance, hormonal balance, brain-hemisphere balance or heart–brain coherence. Those would require defined measures and direct comparative trials.
For the Ten-Step Kumbhak, the phrase “perfect balance of body, breath, mind, brain and heart” names an aspirational design coherence: no part is asked to dominate, strain or contradict the others. It is not a claim that clinical homeostasis, hormones, brain activity or cardiac regulation have been measured and found “perfect.”
The traditional claim deserves respect in its own domain. The biomedical claim must wait for biomedical evidence.
Are the Hands Really Sympathetic and Parasympathetic? The Necessary Scientific Distinction 🧠❤️
The yogic statement and the modern shorthand are not identical
It is common in contemporary yoga teaching to describe:
- the right sun hand as warming, active and sympathetic;
- the left moon hand as cooling, receptive and parasympathetic.
This can be a useful bridge for a modern reader, but it is a bridge—not a sentence from an ancient text.
Ancient yoga did not use the twentieth-century categories “sympathetic nervous system” and “parasympathetic nervous system.” It spoke through Prāṇa, Nāḍī, Iḍā, Piṅgalā, Sūrya, Candra, Rajas, Tamas and other concepts belonging to a different map of life.
Respecting yoga does not require pretending it secretly wrote modern neuroanatomy. Respecting science does not require treating every unmeasured yogic concept as meaningless.
What modern anatomy says about the hands
Neither hand is anatomically a sympathetic or parasympathetic organ.
Both hands contain:
- skin receptors for touch, pressure, vibration, temperature and pain;
- motor and sensory nerves arising through peripheral nerve pathways;
- blood vessels whose diameter can be influenced by sympathetic activity;
- muscles, tendons, joints and connective tissues;
- and dense cortical representation in the brain’s sensory and motor systems.
The parasympathetic vagus nerve does not run into the thumb pads as a switch waiting to be closed. Lightly joining the thumbs has not been shown to stimulate the vagus nerve directly.
This does not disprove the yogic moon–sun interpretation. It does prevent a category error: subtle symbolism should not be drawn as literal modern nerve anatomy.
What unilateral-nostril studies can—and cannot—add
Scientific research has examined left- and right-nostril breathing because the yogic lateral map makes testable predictions.
A 2022 crossover EEG study in 30 adults found different patterns of cortical activity during left and right unilateral nasal airflow. The authors treated the findings as preliminary and did not test hand placement.12
Other results are not perfectly one-directional. A 2002 study found that both left and right unilateral forced-nostril breathing increased systolic blood pressure and heart rate in men.13 That finding does not fit the simple claim that every left-sided intervention is automatically parasympathetic.
These studies justify continued investigation of nasal laterality. They do not prove that:
- the left palm is a parasympathetic control;
- the right palm is a sympathetic control;
- placing one palm above the other changes nostril dominance;
- or Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra activates the parasympathetic nervous system.
Nostril breathing and hand stacking are different interventions.
Kumbhak itself can recruit more than one autonomic response
Breath retention is not accurately described as a permanent “rest-and-digest switch.” During a sufficiently long hold, carbon dioxide rises, oxygen may fall, vascular resistance changes and sympathetic vasoconstriction may increase. Heart rate can simultaneously be influenced by parasympathetic mechanisms. The response depends on the phase, duration, starting lung volume, effort and person.
In one direct study, one-minute Kumbhak attempts increased systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressure and total peripheral resistance while stroke volume and cardiac output fell.14 That was an acute physiological study, not the deliberately brief, easy Ten-Step method. It nevertheless shows why the word “parasympathetic” cannot be used as a universal label for retention.
The traditional rationale for placing the lunar hand above the solar hand therefore gains conceptual relevance: the method does not deny activation; it places a symbol of cooling containment over it.
Science has not yet shown that the symbol causes the physiology.
The most accurate wording
Traditionally accurate:
The left hand represents Iḍā, Candra and cooling receptivity; the right represents Piṅgalā, Sūrya and active warmth. Left-over-right gives the lunar principle the upper position.
Acceptable as clearly labelled modern interpretation:
Contemporary yoga teachers sometimes compare the solar side with sympathetic activation and the lunar side with parasympathetic settling.
Not scientifically established:
The left hand is a parasympathetic hand, the right hand is a sympathetic hand, and stacking them in this order activates the vagus nerve.
The distinction allows traditional knowledge to stand with dignity without borrowing proof it does not possess.
Why the Upper Thumbprint Pads Touch 👍
The thumb instruction is deliberately more exact than “join the thumbs.” It serves several layers at once, but those layers do not all carry the same kind of evidence.
Find the correct contact point
Look at one thumbnail. The intended contact surface is on the opposite side of the thumb:
- on the soft, fleshy thumbprint pad;
- high on that pad, immediately below the extreme tip;
- clear of the thumbnail;
- and broad enough that the thumbs do not have to balance on two tiny points.
Bring the two thumbs towards each other and let those upper pad surfaces meet. Do not push. Do not whiten the skin. Do not bend the wrists or lift the hands merely to preserve contact.
The phrase “upper portions of the thumbprint pads” is more reliable than “thumb tips” because ordinary language uses “tip” for several different places: the nail edge, the extreme apex, the side of the thumb or the whole terminal pad.
The anatomical reason: thumb pads are exceptionally informative touch surfaces
The thumbprint pad is glabrous skin—hairless skin specialised for fine touch. Classic human microneurography identified several kinds of low-threshold mechanoreceptive units in the glabrous skin of the hand, with dense tactile representation in the digits.8
That anatomy makes a light contact useful:
- it can be felt without visual checking;
- it does not require a gripping action;
- it supplies continuous information about pressure and alignment;
- and small changes in effort become noticeable quickly.
This does not prove that thumb-pad contact reduces stress. It explains why the contact is capable of acting as a precise sensory reference.
Why a soft pad is preferable to the extreme tip
Extreme tip-to-tip contact has a very small base. Ordinary movement from breathing, differences in thumb length or an unsupported wrist can repeatedly break it. The practitioner may respond by lifting the thumbs or pressing harder.
Upper-pad contact is slightly broader and more forgiving. It is like bringing two cushions together instead of balancing two needles.
The contact should still remain small and light. “Broader” does not mean squeezing a large area.
Why the nails do not touch
Nails are hard keratin plates. Nail-to-nail contact is less yielding, can slide or click, varies with nail length and may tempt the practitioner to create extra pressure.15
Keeping the nails apart is an ergonomic refinement, not a warning about harmful “nail energy.” Nothing dangerous is believed to leak from the nails. The point is simply to preserve soft skin-to-skin contact.
The thumbs become an effort mirror
The thumb pads can quietly reveal what the rest of the body is doing:
- Contact becomes a press: striving may be entering the practice.
- Thumbs keep separating: the hands may be slipping or insufficiently supported.
- Thumbs tremble: fatigue, anxiety, muscular effort or an awkward position may be present.
- Nails begin to meet: the thumbs may be tilting or the hands may be lifting.
- Contact stays light and unremarkable: the hands are more likely to be resting rather than performing.
These signs are not diagnostic tests. The thumbs do not measure cortisol, vagal tone or anxiety. They merely make hidden muscular effort easier to notice.
When the thumbs begin arguing, the breath is no longer the only place to look.
Pituitary, Pineal, Brain and Sinus Points: What Reflexology Actually Says 🧠
This topic deserves care because several different systems are often blended under the word “acupressure.” Hand reflexology, traditional Chinese acupressure and Ayurvedic marma are not interchangeable maps.
The hand-reflexology connection
In hand reflexology or zone therapy, parts of the hands are mapped as reflex zones corresponding to parts of the body. A peer-reviewed review of reflexology records the thumbs and big toes in a longitudinal zone associated, within that system, with the pituitary, pineal, brain, hypothalamus and sinuses, among other structures.16
Many practical hand-reflexology charts place head and brain correspondences around the thumb tip and upper thumb pad, with the pituitary often mapped centrally and sinus zones shown across the digit tips. The two upper thumbprint pads used in Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra therefore occupy a region that reflexology traditions commonly treat as relevant to the head and endocrine-centre map.
This is a valid traditional correspondence to mention. It is not anatomical proof that the glands are physically located in the thumbs.
Why the word “point” must remain flexible
Reflexology charts are not fully uniform. Even the UK Association of Reflexologists warns that its hand explorer is for guidance and should not be treated as a definitive chart.17
The review literature also describes broad longitudinal zones, not one universally agreed millimetre of upper thumb pad. Therefore, it would be too precise to say:
“This exact spot is the medically verified pineal point.”
A more honest statement is:
The chosen contact lies within a thumb region that several hand-reflexology systems associate with the pituitary, pineal, brain and sinuses. Direct evidence that lightly touching the two pads changes those organs has not been established.
That wording preserves the traditional map without turning it into an endocrine claim.
Reflexology is not the same as standard Chinese acupressure
Traditional Chinese medicine uses named acupuncture points along meridian systems. The World Health Organization’s standard location for the best-known classical thumb point, LU11 (Shàoshāng), is near the radial corner of the thumbnail, not in the centre of the thumbprint pad.18
That means the Ten-Step contact should not be described as bilateral stimulation of LU11. It deliberately avoids the nail edge and uses a different surface.
Acupressure also ordinarily involves purposeful pressure or massage at a selected point. Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra uses light contact, not a treatment dose of pressure. The contact may be “acupressure-like” in the broad popular sense of using a meaningful hand area, but its closest named correspondence is to hand reflexology, not to a standardised Chinese acupoint prescription.
What the clinical evidence for reflexology can and cannot prove
Some trials and reviews report improvements in anxiety, pain, sleep or wellbeing after reflexology. Other systematic reviews find mixed, inconclusive or very-low-certainty results, and most study complete treatment sessions rather than two thumb pads touching.1920
Even a positive reflexology trial would not automatically prove the Ten-Step thumb contact because:
- reflexology sessions use directed pressure and often many mapped areas;
- practitioner attention and therapeutic context may contribute;
- foot reflexology and hand reflexology are not identical;
- the Ten-Step contact is static and deliberately light;
- and no comparison has isolated this exact contact during Kumbhak.
The reflexology evidence therefore supports traditional relevance and a research question, not a claim that Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra stimulates the pituitary or pineal gland.
Where the pituitary gland, pineal gland and sinuses actually are
In modern anatomy:
- the pituitary gland lies at the base of the brain in the sella turcica;
- the pineal gland lies deep in the brain near the roof of the third ventricle;
- the paranasal sinuses are air-filled spaces in skull bones around the nasal cavity;
- and the thumb pad contains skin, connective tissue, sensory endings, blood vessels and the terminal anatomy of the digit.
There is no recognised anatomical tube or nerve pathway through which pressing one thumb pad directly squeezes, drains or switches on those cranial structures.
If a person has symptoms suggesting pituitary disease, a pineal lesion or serious sinus disease, a mudra is not a diagnostic test or substitute for medical assessment.
A respectful way to hold the two accounts together
The two accounts need not be forced into false agreement.
Reflexology says: the thumb region corresponds functionally or energetically with head, brain, pituitary, pineal and sinus zones.
Anatomy says: the thumb pad is a tactile surface; the glands and sinuses are physically inside the skull.
Current research says: light bilateral pad contact is readily perceptible, but it has not been shown to alter pituitary hormones, pineal melatonin, brain activity or sinus drainage.
The Ten-Step Kumbhak says: use the exact upper-pad contact as a stable tactile and traditional point of meeting, without pressing and without requiring a medical promise.
This is not a compromise that weakens tradition. It is a disciplined refusal to make one system impersonate another.
What Ayurveda and Marma Add—and What They Do Not 🌿
Classical marma gives the hands real importance
The Suśruta Saṃhitā, Śārīra Sthāna 6, enumerates 107 Marmas and names eleven in each upper limb, including Kṣipra, Tala-Hṛdaya, Kūrcha, Kūrcha-Śira and Maṇibandha.21
This shows that classical Ayurveda does not treat the hands as insignificant. They contain vital junctions where injury, pain, function and Prāṇa are taken seriously. The same chapter describes Marmas in relation to Prāṇa and to lunar and fiery principles.21
That gives a profound Ayurvedic background for treating hand placement with care.
Classical hand Marmas are not the same as the upper thumb pad
Accuracy requires the next sentence too:
- Kṣipra Marma is associated with the space between thumb and index finger.
- Tala-Hṛdaya Marma is associated with the central palm.
- Maṇibandha Marma is at the wrist.
- The classical list does not name a “pituitary Marma” or “pineal Marma” on the upper thumbprint pad.
Therefore, classical marma cannot honestly be presented as exact textual proof that touching the top thumb pads stimulates the brain glands.
Its contribution is different: the hand is a field of vital, sensory and functional relationships; contact should be precise, non-injurious and integrated with the whole posture.
Touch and mind in Ayurveda
The Caraka Saṃhitā describes tactile experience as arising through the skin’s touch faculty together with the participation of mind.22
That insight is especially relevant here. Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra does not use strong stimulation. It offers the mind one quiet tactile fact:
the two sides have met, and they do not need to press.
In Ayurvedic language, a stressed state may be understood through excess movement, irregularity or dispersal associated with Vāta. The supported hands create containment:
- movement reduces;
- both sides meet;
- the arms are given a base;
- touch remains continuous;
- and the mind receives one uncomplicated sensory field.
This is a coherent Ayurvedic interpretation. It is not clinical proof that the mudra treats a Vāta disorder.
Soma above Tejas as an Ayurvedic-yogic reading
The left-over-right order can also be contemplated as Soma above Tejas—cooling nourishment moderating fiery transformation. This echoes the lunar-over-solar yogic rationale without claiming that one palm contains a measurable quantity of Soma and the other a measurable quantity of Tejas.
The image is subtle but practical:
Fire gives transformation. Moonlight gives proportion. Stress relief needs both vitality and permission to stop.
The fingers and Mahābhūtas
Later mudra systems often associate the thumb with Agni, the fire element. Joined thumbs may therefore be interpreted as gathering, completing or balancing the fire principle.
These finger–element correspondences are meaningful within mudra teaching but are not uniformly documented across the oldest Haṭha texts, and they have not been scientifically shown to alter metabolic fire, inflammation or endocrine output.

Arms held away from support must work against gravity. Even modest, sustained shoulder activity can become intrusive when a person is attempting to remain still.
In a laboratory study of 23 participants, forearm support reduced activity in the upper trapezius and anterior deltoid across the shoulder positions tested.7 This was not a Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra or Kumbhak trial. It supports a relevant principle: supported arms can ask less from shoulder muscles.
That matters because unnecessary shoulder elevation and upper-chest bracing can contradict the Ten-Step instruction to keep the body relaxed during easy retention.
Why the hands touch the lower torso
The body-facing edges of the hands rest directly against the lower torso. This is not pressure on the abdomen and not an attempt to manipulate internal organs.
The contact:
- helps prevent the hands from sliding away;
- gives support from the inner side as well as from underneath;
- places the joined hands at the bodily midline;
- and reduces the sense that the arms must hold a shape in empty space.
If the hands cannot reach the body without pulling the shoulders forward, support them with a folded cloth or small cushion. The principle is support, not imitation.
Why the hands are below the chest focus
The centre of the chest remains the principal attentional location in the Ten-Step Kumbhak. Holding the hands high near the chest would add arm effort and could compete with that focus.
The lower placement gives the practice a stable base while leaving the chest unobstructed for its instructed movement during normal Pūrak and Rechak.
The result is a useful vertical relationship:
- attention remains at the centre of the chest;
- the hands rest at the lowest centre of the torso;
- and the spine connects the two without requiring rigidity.
Why both palms face upward
Upward palms create an open, non-gripping form. They do not medically switch off the stress response, but they make clenching easier to detect.
Traditional practitioners may see receptivity or offering. A secular reader may see supported hands that are not holding a phone, tool, weapon or task. Both readings lead to one useful behaviour: stop grasping for the duration of the round.
There is no direct evidence that turning the palms upward by itself increases heart-rate variability, lowers cortisol or activates a chakra. Its strongest defensible roles are postural, attentional, behavioural and symbolic.
How Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra May Support Stress Relief 🎯
It gives the body fewer unfinished tasks
Stress rarely lives in thought alone. It distributes itself through small preparations:
- fingers ready to type a reply;
- shoulders ready to absorb impact;
- hands ready to grasp;
- eyes ready to scan;
- and breath ready to react.
The mudra does not command calm. It completes several small decisions:
- where the hands belong;
- which hand is above;
- where the thumbs meet;
- how much pressure to use;
- and whether the position changes with the respiratory phase.
When those questions are settled, attention has less housekeeping to perform.
It gives the mind a quiet secondary anchor
The thumb contact does not replace attention at the centre of the chest. It remains a secondary sensory reference in the background.
That can help when the mind begins to:
- count retention seconds competitively;
- search for extraordinary sensations;
- replay a stressful conversation;
- or narrow around the urge to breathe.
A tiny field of contact says: the hands remain supported; the round is still being practised rather than endured.
Light touch can convey information without becoming a brace
In postural-control experiments, very light fingertip contact with a stable surface can reduce sway even when the force is too small to provide meaningful mechanical support.23 The explanation is sensory information.
Thumb-to-thumb contact in a seated mudra is not the same experiment. Neither thumb is attached to an external stable surface, and balance during Kumbhak was not tested. The evidence supports only a general principle: light touch can be informative even when it bears almost no load.
Chosen touch may participate in stress regulation
In a randomised laboratory study of 159 healthy adults, a different self-soothing touch posture—one hand on the chest and one on the abdomen—was associated with a smaller cortisol response to a stressor than a control task. Heart rate and self-reported stress did not differ.24
This is relevant but indirect. It shows that chosen self-touch can participate in a stress response under some conditions. It does not show that Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra lowers cortisol, and it cannot tell us whether the upper hand should be left or right.
It may become a familiar beginning cue
When the same posture is repeated in the same context, it can acquire predictive meaning. Over time, forming Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra may tell the practitioner: sit safely, reduce effort, attend to the chest and do not compete.

It protects the practice from performance
Breath retention can attract measurement: How many seconds? Was today longer? Can I win against the urge?
The mudra offers a different metric:
- Are the hands still open?
- Are the thumb pads still light?
- Are the shoulders still free?
- Can the hold end while ease and reserve remain?
The moment the thumbs press for achievement, the body has revealed that stress has entered through a side door.

Antar Kumbhak and Bāhya Kumbhak do not feel the same. One follows comfortable fullness; the other follows comfortable emptiness. The chest position and internal respiratory signals differ.

One mudra throughout means:

sthirasukham āsanam — “Posture is steadily easy.”25
If the hands hover, wrists hurt or thumbs press, the posture has lost sukha. If the hands repeatedly rearrange, it has lost sthira.
Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra serves Kumbhak only while it supports both.
Yoga Sūtra 3.1 and 3.2: place, then continuity
Yoga Sūtra 3.1 defines Dhāraṇā as binding attention to a place; 3.2 describes Dhyāna as continuity there.2627

The text instructs that methods concerning the vital air be practised with the mind joined to them rather than wandering elsewhere.30

Classical Haṭha Mudrās are often whole-body seals
The best-known classical Haṭha lists include Mahāmudrā, Mahābandha, Mahāvedha, Khecarī, Uḍḍīyāna, Mūlabandha, Jālandhara, Viparītakaraṇī, Vajrolī and Śakticālana.31
Those are frequently whole-body energetic techniques, not merely hand shapes. This is why an article should not claim that the precise Bhairavī Dhyāna hand form appears in every classical Haṭha catalogue.
Its authority comes from a convergence of later yoga-mudra transmission, ancient left–moon/right–sun teaching, established contemplative hand forms and practical adaptation for the Ten-Step Kumbhak.
Evidence Ladder: What Is Established, Plausible, Traditional or Unproven 🔬
Wide comparison tables can be difficult to read on a phone, so the evidence is presented vertically.
Level 1 — Directly documented traditions
Supported by sources:
- Yoga-mudra manuals call left-over-right Bhairavī and right-over-left Bhairava.12
- Official Sōtō Zen instructions use left-over-right with thumbs meeting.3
- Buddhist Dhyāna Mudra also has right-over-left historical forms.4
- The Śāṇḍilya Upaniṣad places Iḍā on the left with the moon and Piṅgalā on the right with the sun.6
What this level proves: the naming, order and symbolic rationale have genuine traditional precedent.
What it does not prove: a medical effect.
Level 2 — Established anatomy and general physiology

- the lunar hand moderates the warming quality of Kumbhak;
- joined hands contain or seal Prāṇa;
- joined thumbs balance Agni;
- the upper thumb pads correspond with pituitary, pineal, brain and sinus reflex zones;

There is no direct evidence that this exact Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra:
- activates the vagus nerve;
- makes the left hand parasympathetic or the right hand sympathetic;
- changes core body temperature;
- lowers cortisol;
- increases heart-rate variability;
- balances the cerebral hemispheres;
- increases melatonin through the pineal gland;
- changes pituitary hormone secretion;
- drains or clears the sinuses;
- treats anxiety, hypertension, insomnia or endocrine disease;
- makes forced retention safe;
- or is physiologically superior to reversing the hands.
Absence of direct evidence is not proof that every subjective or traditional effect is false. It is a boundary around what may be promised to a reader.

Signs of a well-formed Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra
- The right hand feels like a base, not a clenched support.
- The left hand rests rather than pushes.
- Both palms remain upward.
- The hands are supported from below and against the lower torso.
- The wrists feel neutral and free of sharp bending.
- The fingers remain open and unforced.
- The upper thumbprint pads meet clearly and lightly.
- The nails and extreme tips remain apart.
- The shoulders can remain down.
- Attention can stay at the centre of the chest without repeatedly repairing the hands.
Signs that support or positioning should change
- thumb, wrist, elbow or shoulder pain;
- persistent tingling or numbness;
- one wrist sharply bent;
- elbows held in the air;
- hands pulling the torso forward;
- pressure strong enough to whiten the thumb pads;
- nails scraping or clicking;
- fingers gripping the lower palm;
- or attention becoming obsessed with visual perfection.
The mudra is meant to remove avoidable work. If it becomes work, improve the support.
Different bodies need different support
Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra does not require Padmāsana. The Ten-Step Kumbhak may be practised safely while seated on a chair, cushion or floor.
Depending on arm length, torso proportions, mobility and the height of the lap, a person may use:
- a folded cloth beneath the hands;
- a small cushion across the lap;
- support under the forearms;
- or a chair height that allows the shoulders to release.
Do not distort the spine or lift the shoulders to reproduce a photograph.
When the thumbs cannot touch comfortably
Arthritis, injury, tremor, neuropathy, joint deformity or recent surgery may make thumb contact painful or impossible. Do not force it.

A perfect hand position cannot cancel a forced breath hold.
The Ten-Step Kumbhak must remain seated, comfortable and deliberately submaximal. End Antar Kumbhak or Bāhya Kumbhak while it still feels completely easy and while you remain certain that another one to three seconds would have been comfortable. Never test the limit.
Stop immediately and return to normal breathing for dizziness, light-headedness, faintness, unusual breathlessness, chest pain or tightness, panic, visual disturbance, tingling or any other discomfort.
Do not practise breath retention while driving, swimming, bathing, operating machinery, walking in an unsafe place or doing anything in which a brief loss of awareness could cause injury.
People with significant heart, lung, blood-pressure, neurological, fainting, pregnancy-related, retinal, glaucoma, trauma-related or panic-related concerns should seek individual clinical guidance before practising retention.

Frequently Asked Questions 🙋
Why is the official name now Bhairavī Dhyāna Mudra?
Because Bhairavī identifies the left-over-right hand order used in the Ten-Step Kumbhak, while Dhyāna identifies the supported meditative form and joined thumbs. The compound name prevents confusion with common right-over-left Dhyāna Mudra depictions.
Is the left hand definitely supposed to be on top?
Yes, in the Ten-Step Kumbhak. The open left palm rests over the open right palm. This is a standardised feature of the method, not a choice made differently on each round.
Is right-over-left wrong?
No. It is historically authentic in important Buddhist Dhyāna Mudra traditions and is also used for Bhairava Mudra in modern yoga manuals.41 It is simply not the official hand order of the Ten-Step Kumbhak.
Why does the Ten-Step method choose Bhairavī rather than Bhairava?

Yes. You may evaluate whether it supports the arms, reduces fidgeting and provides a useful tactile cue. A person is not required to claim an experience that did not occur.
Likewise, a practitioner may honour its lunar–solar meaning without claiming that medical science has already confirmed it.

The thumbs meet not at hard nails or precarious points but at soft, sensitive pads. The forearms receive support. The hands remain below the primary chest focus. The gesture does not change when fullness becomes emptiness or when retention returns to normal breath.
Yoga gives this arrangement a language of Iḍā and Piṅgalā, Candra and Sūrya, Prāṇa and Dhyāna. Ayurveda offers Soma and Tejas, Vāta and containment, skin and mind. Reflexology places head and gland correspondences in the thumb region. Anatomy describes mechanoreceptors, support and muscular effort. Psychology recognises attention, repetition, self-touch and the reduction of unnecessary choices.
